Little Village Kids Family Care Center is unlike any other childcare center in the world. We learned when we opened nearly a decade ago that the ultimate “product” of our business isn’t children. It isn’t education. It’s Families!
Not long after we founded LVK, I wrote a book called, “The Twelve Freedoms of Healthy Families.” These twelve freedoms became our guiding principles as we set out to build a new and different kind of care center.
We knew that we wanted the entire family to be stronger for having been involved with us. We knew we wanted skilled compassionate teachers that stayed a long time giving us insanely low staff turnover. We knew that we wanted to reach families of all ethnicities, incomes, backgrounds, and faiths. This is why our mission statement says:
“Little Village Kids Family Care Center strengthens families by caring for and educating parents and children.”
Since 2009, we have watched the number of GrandFamilies in our community grow. We have seen how these tireless, dedicated adults sacrifice to raise a second generation. We’ve seen them suffer and struggle as their children are lost to substance abuse and depression. And, yet, we have also witnessed their strong will and their strength of character as they refuse to allow their Grandchildren to be lost as well.
At Little Village Kids, we have been accepting county voucher assistance since the beginning. We know how the system works and it is failing these GrandFamilies. No one saw this coming when the voucher system was designed. It was created to help young families as they sought to make a better life for their children and themselves through education and hard work.
The problem is that Grandparents usually make too much money to qualify for vouchers, but not enough to afford childcare. And, because of the school or work requirement necessary for young families, many of them would have to go back to work even if they did qualify. Family Care Center means that we care for the whole family, not just children. It also means that we go beyond billing and educating. We’re always finding new ways to love and make a difference. That’s where The Great GrandFamilies Project comes in.
We wanted to create a program that would provide real help, support, and resources for the GrandFamilies in our community, so here it is.
This fall (2017) Little Village Kids will fund and host the pilot run of The Great GrandFamilies Project in cooperation with the Butler County Educational Resource Center and the Butler County Kinship Navigator Program. We are honored to be a part of this groundbreaking program and we look forward to blessing many GrandFamilies in the future.
And if you want to see how a Family cares for Families, and experience a one-of-a-kind childcare environment with all of the things I mentioned above, come check us out at littlevillagekids.com.
